Welcome to the third installment of Yiddish saying of the week! This is (more or less) a biweekly blog in which I will post a saying covered in class together with a student's explanation. I will provide the original Yiddish first, the transliteration, and then the English translation. Enjoy!
"פֿון וואָלט איך און זאָלט איך קומט גאָרנישט אַרויס".
איך וואָלט געזאָגט אַז דאָס איז ניט סתּם אַ שפּריכוואָרט, נאָר אַ "לײַף לעסן". איך, למשל, האָב שוין אַדורכגעמאַכט עטלעכע לאַגעס אין וועלכע עס וואָלט געווען אַ סך בעסער אויב איך וואָלט אָט דאָס שפּריכוואָרט דורכגעפֿירט אין מײַן לעבן.
לעצטנס איז אַזאַ לאַגע געשען: איך האָב געוואָלט הערן אַן אַבליגאַטאָרישן קורס פֿון מײַן אוניווערסיטעט דווקא דעם זמן, ווײַל דעם זמן האָב איך מער פֿרײַצײַט אין פֿאַרגלײַך מיט די אַנדערע. האָב איך געטראַכט: "איך זאָל זיך פֿאַרשרײַבן אויף דעם!" אָבער פֿון וואָלט איך און זאָלט איך איז גאָרנישט אַרויסגעקומען און איך האָב פֿאַרשפּעטיקט דעם טערמין פֿון דער פֿאַרשרײַבונג. דאָס איז נאָר א קליינער בײַשפּיל פֿון ווי וויכטיק עס איז דורכצופֿירן, וואָס פֿריער, עפּעס וואָס מע האָט אין זינען, אַנישט, איז עס שוין צו שפּעט.

Hob ikh getrakht: "Ikh zol zikh farshraybn af dem!" Ober fun volt ikh un zolt ikh iz gornisht aroysgekumen un ikh hob farshpetikt dem termin fun der farshraybung. Dos iz nor a kleyner bayshpil fun vi vikhtik es iz durkhtsufirn, vos frier, epes vos me hot in zinen, anisht, iz es shoyn tsu shpet.
"Woulda Coulda Shoulda".
This isn't just another proverb, but actually a life lesson. I, for one, have gone through many situations which would have gone much smoother had I followed this proverb.
Recently such a situation occurred: I wanted to take a required course at my university during a semester when I had more free time. I thought to myself: "I should register for it!" But I waited and it was too late. This is just a small example of how important it is to do something as soon as possible because if you don't you'll find yourself saying "Woulda Coulda Shoulda".
