In this course, conducted in Yiddish, we will examine small nuanced words in Yiddish and the huge role they play in the idiomatic nature of the language. Words like gor, dokh, dos, vi, ven, zhe, vos, shoyn, epes/etvos. This course is especially intended for translators (Yiddish to English) who find it challenging to translate these words. The instructor will provide PDFs with example sentences from literature given beneath the dictionary definition. Participants will be tasked to match the examples with the definitions. Often they will find it necessary to add or expand on the dictionary entries. They will translate the examples into an idiomatic English and discuss their translation choices.
